Anyone travelling to Canada by air who is from a visa-exempt country and is travelling to Canada by air (using their visa-exempt country passport), must apply for eTA to get authorisation to enter the country. You must have a Canada eTA even if you are only getting a connecting flight in and out of Canada, if you do not have another form of Canadian visa.

It is quite easy to get an online eTA for Canada, as you just need to complete the online form and provide your personal details, passport details and answer eligibility questions. The form should only take around ten minutes to complete, and you will need your valid passport, a card to pay for your application and an email address for your confirmation to be sent to.

If you are a permanent resiident of Canada then you do not require an eTA to return to Canada but you must travel with your valid Permanent Resident Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document.

Unfortunately, all eTA applications must be completed separately for individuals and there is no family or group application process. Each person, including both adults and children, must have their own passport and their own eTA application. Once each eTA is approved it will be electronically linked to the passport of the applicant.

No, it is not possible to renew an eTA. Your eTA is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever is the soonest. When your eTA expires, or you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new eTA and complete the full application process again. You will also be required to pay for your application fee again.

When you have an eTA appliction approved, your authorisation to travel to Canada lasts for five years. However, it is important to note that the eTA is intended for short visits only and not for trips of any longer than six months at a time. If you are planning on visiting Canada for a period that is longer than the six months limit then you will need to apply for a different type of visa, depending on the purpose of your visit. You may need to apply for a working visa, or permanent residency for example.

Citizens from the UK are visa-exempt and are therefore eligible to apply for an eTA as authorization for their trip. This does not mean that the eTA will definitely be approved, as there is further criteria that must be reviewed to determine whether the eTA will be approved. For example, any criminal convictions, security concerns or health concerns could result in the eTA being denied.

Your eTA cannot be cancelled once it has been submitted, so you will not be able to get a refund even if you do not go ahead and use your eTA. If you are trying to cancel your eTA because you have completed some incorrect information on your application, it may be possible to update it depending on which information you need to change.
